Eating More Often? You're Not Alone; Here's Why

Uncategorized Dec 02, 2022

Eating Food in Response to Mood is Normal

You're not alone during the winter and holiday season if you eat more often. That's because most people unknowingly eat in response to stress, loneliness, and boredom. And we also eat for celebration and connection with friends and family. That's why we all associate food with tradition and memories too.

Why Food?

Our connection to food is not only hard-wired to our survival; it's also connected to our feelings and emotions. Food is our biological response to satisfy the discomfort of hunger, and it's the comfort we feel after eating that the brain associates with satisfaction.

3 Reasons We Eat

We all eat for at least one of three reasons: reward, relief, or routine. Reward as in "celebration" or a treat. "Relief" means relief from real hunger or decoy hunger in the form of cravings, boredom, loneliness, or other stress or discomfort. And finally, routine is the time of day or habit-based pattern we repeat with a set meal time or routine eating.

Seeking Comfort

If you're like me, relief was a big reason I continued overeating. And it's a big reason I continued gaining weight and losing my health and self-worth. In this video, I share my experience and shed more light on how our emotions inform our behavior. And how these experiences continue to build into our identity and attributes.

The Solution?

Once you know more about what's driving the behavior, you can transform it. And then learn to practice new responses to thoughts, emotions, and stress. That's the power of transformation; practicing it and repeating it until new habitual responses and reactions can ultimately work to reshape your body and health too.
